Heartbreak cut into her with a razor’s glistening edge. And she couldn’t understand how it all happened. It’s an odd thing – a breakup. With “I Don’t Get Breakups,” the pop singer-songwriter wonders how a relationship can burn and be forced to move on so quickly. What you’re left with is nothing more than ash and ruin. “Oh I / I don’t get breakups / They’re stupid and made up,” she sings. “One day I say you’re the love of my life / The next swear I couldn’t care less if you died.”
BIZZY’s voice rings with startling clarity, flipping through the exhaustive emotion that comes with coping with and defining a breakup. “Now, all of a sudden I’m supposed to feel nothing at all,” she cries over echoing drums. The ache in her chest nearly bursts and cracks her ribcage, leaving her heart dangling in between. “I Don’t Get Breakups” sweeps from a bedroom confessional to an anthem for all scorned lovers.
In writing the song with Brandon Meagher and Fran Litterski, BIZZY mulled over “a relationship that had ended prior to writing the song,” she says in a statement, “and it dawned on me how bizarre breakups really are. How can we go from loving someone with all our hearts (like it physically hurts how bad you love them), and then over time, falling out of love with them? One day they’re your person, and your whole world revolves around them… then all of a sudden, something happens and we’re strangers living on the same planet.”
