Gabi Sklar Works Through Toxic Relationships In ‘Thank God’ (Review)

Acoustic guitar lies in the gooey pop center. Gabi Sklar’s new song “Thank God” possesses an indie spirit, dressed up with haunting background vocals and a slick pop vocal line. “You took my sunshine, turned it to rain / Coming in hot like a hurricane,” she sings. “Doing it over and over again / I’ll never be the same.”

The breakup, it seems, is a double-edged sword. While her ex wreaked absolute havoc, it also comes with the calm that always arrives after a raging thunderstorm. Written with Anton Göransson, Isabella Sjöstrand, and Marqueze Parker, the sweeping ballad details “the end of two toxic relationships: one was the relationship I was in at the time, and the other was the relationship I had with myself,” she tellsSweety High. “It felt like a breath of fresh air to end this period of my life, address what the reality of my situation was, and begin the process of healing that relationship with myself.”

Admittedly, Sklar had a ton of “unresolved feelings” she needed to process. Only writing allowed for such catharsis. “I realized that when you bury those feelings, they still never really go away,” she adds. On that particular day in the studio, Sklar and her collaborators were writing a different song altogether. “When I finally took a break after five hours and went to the bathroom, I came up with the hook for what is now ‘Thank God,'” she recalls. “Thank God, literally, that I took that break, I guess! I think certain songs just write themselves, and this song is one of those instances.”

23 years old, the viral sensation – 3.5 million followers on TikTok alone – has issued hit after hit. “Thank God” follows such streaming juggernauts as “Pardon My French” and “Good Kisser,” both released earlier this year. With her latest emotionally charged entry, she proves her staying power – and she shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. She’s just getting started.
