Alana Springsteen – ‘TWENTY SOMETHING’

An expansive 18-track album, Springsteen is impressively a co-writer on all 18. In a press statement, Springsteen states, “Our twenties, they can be confusing, exhilarating, humbling, and unforgettable. We’ll mess things up, over and over again. We’ll learn, do better, and start figuring things out – the world around us and ourselves. And if we’re lucky … and we do the work … and we love hard, once in a while, we get these glimpses of what it feels like to get it right. TWENTY SOMETHING, that’s the title of my debut album and it’s about all of it.”
The title track “twenty something” is a moving and expansive nostalgia feast, this track gives you everything you want for a summer car ride anthem. The strings softly accompany Springsteen’s vulnerable strength of vocal, and the track builds perfectly as she looks back on the joyous naïveté of being a “twenty something,” reminding us that even when you are afraid of the future, there is no need to run.

“ghost in my guitar” (feat. Chris Stapleton) – Walking down the long ago streets of Nashville is not hard to envision as you are taken in by the steely warmth of Stapleton’s guitar, which drives the haunting outlaw heartbeat of this track. Springsteen calls out to the ghost in her guitar, begging the haunting to stop and asking for balance. With heartfelt and pensive vocals spread throughout the track, Springsteen offers us a haunting of a different kind.

“tennessee is mine” – This track brings about a feeling many know, but are too sad to express. In a profoundly earnest homage to joyous travels with a bygone love, Springsteen humbly requests just one thing: that Tennessee be left for her. This track’s twangy slide guitar offers us a warm, grieving backup vocal of sorts as we travel through hometowns and sunsets with her, reminding ourselves of why we must always move on.
