Cameron Hawthorn Lights Up Lonely Spaces with ‘Lone Star’ (Review)
Cameron Hawthorn longs for intimacy with his dusty country tune “Lone Star.”
Twinkling with an Orville Peck-bent lonesomeness, the sweeping mid-tempo finds the singer baying to the silver crescent moon. With each lyric, he pours his lustful desires on thick and pulls his lover close.

“I’ll show you how the Big Dipper shines bright / We’ll light up a lonely space,” he sings, his voice supple and smooth. “Been staring at the ceiling way too long / Let’s get together and turn each other one.”
Co-written with Lena Stone, Shelby Troy Archer, and Jeffrey Scott and Paul Rene Laliberte, “Lone Star” evokes the classic spirit of the 1960s and ‘70s countrypolitan style. It feels both throwback and modern, a perfect balance for Hawthorn’s brand of vocal panache. “Come on baby, fly with me / Get high with me / We’ll go howling at the moon,” he croons.

On the “Lone Star” visual, he shared the inspiration on Instagram. “Since I was a kid, I’ve been fascinated by The Wizard of Oz. The younger me used to sit in front of the TV, singing along with Dorothy to ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’” he posted. “Maybe it’s because she was a dreamer, maybe it’s because she had those brilliant ruby red slippers, maybe it was the Kansas in me. So now young Cam is living out his boyhood fantasy and I couldn’t be happier to share this video with you.”
Hawthorn has been amassing quite a songbook for a few years now. He first earned a streaming hit with “Dancing in the Living Room,” which samples his 2020 EP Mustang. His growing catalog also includes essentials like “Oh Hot Damn!” and “Boys,” as well as covers of The Chicks (“Cowboy Take Me Away”) and The Eagles (“Desperado”).
