“Never Say Never,” a new single by Cole Swindell and Lainey Wilson, was released on Thursday, November 18th. In this duet, Swindell and Wilson are performing for the first time together.

In 2021, both singer-songwriters were quite successful. The single ‘Some Habits’ by Swindell received rave reviews, and he toured with Thomas Rhett. Wilson landed her first No. 1 single with “Things A Man Oughta Know,” and released the album Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’. The duet marks the 12th career single release for Swindell.

A striking melody runs through “Never Say Never,” giving off an angsty and passionate feeling. Both Swindell and Wilson have a smooth blending of their voices, which should be considered perfect harmony. Within their voices, there is a back and forth, a give and take that matches the emotions in the song. Continuously falling back into old habits, and for someone else, is the theme of the song. “I told my momma, I told my friends, when it comes to her, when it comes to him, never again, last time was the last time, that time.”

The subject matter is one that has been explored in country music before, but Swindell and Wilson bring a new perspective to it. Relationships often present emotionally charged feelings, which are best described by the song “It’s hell and it’s heaven with you.” As the chorus builds, the singers showcase their vocal abilities. With drums kicking in the background, this song would be just as good live as it is on the radio.
