The new single “All I Know About Girls” from Old Dominion, the reigning ACM Vocal Group of the Year, was released on Friday, August 20th. Their previous single “I Was On A Boat That Day” is climbing the charts at the moment.
Since the release of their debut song “Break Up With Him” in 2015, the group has been an unstoppable force. In addition to “Hotel Key,” “Make It Sweet,” “One Man Band,” and “Some People Do,” lead singer Mathew Ramsey has written songs for Thomas Rhett, Kenny Chesney, and Sam Hunt. A large part of their success has come from their radio-friendly songs and their chemistry.
This song has a low-key, acoustic style that complements the harmonies of the band. Guitarists by a fire pit teased the track on their social media accounts. The song was created naturally in that way, as it should be. “All I know about girls is I don’t know nothing at all” provides the essential link between the whole song and the rest of it.
Trying to figure out what women want and need is the theme of this song. There are a million ways to write about relationships, but Ramsey sings about what he knows before finding out he does not know everything. “All I know about girls is you best get out of their way, shut your damn mouth if she got something to say.”
Lyrically, there is a memorable line: “It’s probably the reason Hemingway drank, all the lovesick blues that were written by Hank, they all got stuck right where I am.” Connecting the two matters of the heart has always been a staple for great music.
